If you’re looking to replace the sump pump in your home or need to install a new sump pit and pump all together, then you’ll want to sort through the different types of sump pumps available for sale to determine which one will work best in your particular situation.
There are basically two different types of sump pumps available today, and they are pedestal and submersible sump pumps. Each one is distinctly different than the other in its design and operating method, but they both share the same overall purpose which is removing the excess water from below your home in order to prevent flooding in your basement.
The pedestal pump is perhaps one of the more common types sold to homeowners today. The motor is affixed on top of a pipe that extends down into the pit where a float that rises and falls with the water level is used to activate the pump. This type of sump pump usually is the most inexpensive. Pedestal sump pumps are installed at the top of the sump pit and above the floor surface at the lowest point in your home.
Submersible sump pumps are the only type that actually operates from within the water and not above the water. This type of pump relies on a float system as well which triggers the pump to run when the water reaches a certain level. Submersible pumps are typically more reliable and more efficient, but also more expensive. Submersible sump pumps do not sit above the floor at the lowest point in your home. Rather, they actually reside within the sump pit and operate from under water.
Sump pumps are in no way an indestructible device and are prone to failure just like any other machine with a motor. Sump pump failure at inopportune times can have dire consequences that could leave you in a state of loss. The biggest consequence being that your basement could flood, causing vast amounts of damage and loss. In order to prevent total failure of the sump pump, homeowners can install battery backups which are used as an emergency power source that powers the sump pump if the main power ever fails.
If you need to install a new sump pump in your home, you’ll want to consider a number of different factors when making your decision on about which type of sump pump to purchase. A pedestal sump pump will be less expensive but less reliable, while a submersible sump pump will be more expensive but more reliable. Which one you choose is completely up to you.
